HBO Max has ordered a spinoff series starring Peacemaker, John Cena’s character from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. The eight episode series will see Gunn writing all the episodes and directing a handful of them.
The show will explore the origins of Cena’s character in the movie.
The original Peacemaker first appeared in Fightin’ 5 #40 and was created by writer Joe Gill and artist Pat Boyette at Charlton Comics. Peacemaker was a pacifist diplomat so committed to peace that he was willing to use force as a superhero to advance the cause.
Gunn said, “Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”
