Cast Change & First Image From Disney’s ‘Raya And The Last Dragon’

Disney has released (via Entertainment Weekly if you could not tell) their first rendered image (not concept art) for their upcoming animated feature film, Raya and the Last Dragon:

Still from Raya and the Last Dragon, Raya with her Tuk Tuk

Also, with the release of the image came news of a cast member change, actually the main character of Raya. Replacing Cassie Steele as the voice of Raya will be Kelly Marie Tran, who became widely known after being cast in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Tran will be joined by Awkwafina, who will be playing Sisu, “the last dragon” in a human form.

Don Hall and Carlos López Estrada are onboard as directors for the film along with Paul Briggs and John Ripa, which was done remotely, because of the pandemic. Qui Nguyen and Adele Lim wrote the film.

Here is the film’s premise:

As an evil force threatens the kingdom of Kumandra, it is up to warrior Raya, and her trusty steed Tuk Tuk, to leave their Heart Lands home and track down the last dragon to help stop the villainous Druun.

The film was originally planned to release in November of 2020 until the pandemic hit, and Pixar‘s Soul was moved to that slot. Raya and the Last Dragon is currently scheduled to land on March 12, 2021.

  1. Sounds like it might be good! I’ve really been enjoying the animated family films that have been coming out lately (in fact, I’d consider some of them to be among my favorite films period, like ‘Up’ and ‘Zootopia.’) 🙂
