A few days ago we reported on actor Timothy Olyphant had been cast in a role for the Mandalorian Season 2. Today, /Film is reporting they know who he’ll be playing, Cobb Vanth. If the name doesn’t ring any bells, don’t worry here’s the summary.
Vanth showed up in Chuck Wendig‘s Aftermath novels (they dealt with the years between Return of the Jedi ending to the Battle of Jakku aka the Empire’s “last stand”). In the novel Vanth became the self-appointed sheriff of a Tatooine-settlement called Freetown. He also had acquired Mandalorian armor that Jawas had salvaged from the remains of Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge.
The armor was the first hint that Boba Fett had survived the Sarlacc Pit in the new Star Wars canon (he had in “Legends” survived the pit TWICE describing being quite “indigestible”). And gee whiz guess who’s also rumored to be showing up in this second season too?
Back to Vanth, who has committed to keeping law & order in the town, while dealing with the criminal element who’ve been looking to fill the void of nefarious crime lord who once occupied the planet.
It really sounds more that the character (like Fett) will be showing up in an episode to expand on the greater Star Wars canon. Which, I’m all good. I really wanted to see more of this Vanth character and given the previous visit to Tatooine was all too brief in the first season of the Mandalorian, it’ll be interesting to see what happens when Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) returns.
The Mandalorian Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ in October this year.
