Mike Allred is one of the most well-known modern comic book artist with his pop art-inspired style. His credits include Madman, Red Rocket 7, The Atomics, X-Ray Robot, iZombie, X-Statix, Bowie: Stardust, Rayguns, & Moonage Daydreams, Silver Surfer, and Batman 66.
His son Han Allred has launched a Kickstarter for a full-length documentary exploring existential questions through the life and career of his dad Mike Allred.
About his father’s existential episodes Han says:
As bright as his life may appear, he has periodically endured extreme episodes of existential anxiety and psychological suffering. The first episode occurred at the age of 5. He has continued to experience them, with varying intensity, roughly every five years since then.
The episodes are reminiscent of an out-of-body psychedelic trip, brought on solely by existential questions of infinity, space, and meaning. These episodes have deeply impacted his psyche and, consequently, the work he has put out into the world—most notably his creation Madman.
The documentary will dive into Mike’s existential episodes in order to explore where they come from.
It will also feature interviews from talent including Brian Michael Bendis, Kevin Smith, Matt Fraction, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Joëlle Jones, Courtney Taylor-Taylor, and Craig Thompson.
