Once again, this year proves without a doubt THE HATE WAS STRONG WITH YOU ALL!!! GIVES YOU FOCUS! MAKES YOU STRONGER! To voice your feelings known to the world and I am but the simple conduit for you to do so.
This year, I was wondering what would win given there were SO MANY OPTIONS and so many possibilities of who would win. So much so, I casually dropped my fellow collaborator Tim Midura from the option this year (unlike last year was many people were hungering for). I was almost taken aback not a single write vote came for him. Sorry Tim, you’re going to have to make people SEETHE again this year for your works.
Surprisingly, there were only three write-ins this year out of 235 VOTES total. A down turn from last year’s over 400 VOTES, but there’s a good reason for that (and more on that later). The first I almost put in, but I didn’t because really in the larger scheme of things it wasn’t very maddening.
Yes, Doomsday Clock mini FINALLY ended this year, and honestly I didn’t feel much anything for it. Given not many cast any write-ins I decided not to follow up on it. The comic was there. It told a story and well, will it ever be canon? Yeah, that’s the thing many readers who read the comic wonder as well. Given well, certain characters the future tale told made it on the list for the age old comic reason for maddening: they died.
Boris Johnson becoming PM of Britain, he’s a comicbook villain made flesh!
And this one while fits the criteria for “MADDENING” sadly, I didn’t add it to the list. Even though it and American Politics are truly maddening. And for the final write-in entry there’s…
Jon being aged up
Ah, yes a BENDIS moment. It just isn’t a year to be driven mad by comic fans until Bendis does something really stupid. So stupid in fact that I put the entire Superman comics run as an option. Perhaps, given another DC writer this year was making fans (including myself) grit their teeth and scream bloody murder as they read their comics. Maybe I should have collectively counted these separate moments as one.
Yes, the 2019 once again belonged to DC Comics writer Tom King. Following up last year with two entries, once again story moments from the writer cast a heavy shadow in comics, and once again fans weren’t pleased by his work. If I had kept his Batman run together as a single moment (i.e. I gave two options that drove fans mad, him killing off beloved supporting cast member Alfred Pennyworth, and his Batman run entirely fizzling out when it mercifully ended) it would have tallied the votes to 26 VOTES total and would have come in second. Instead, the two moments by themselves attained 14 and 12 VOTES each and weren’t even in the top 5.
And let’s get to those Top 5 moments this year that drove you MAD WITH ANGER!!
#5 Game of Thrones’ Series Finale (16 VOTES)
Three major franchises made a curtain call this year. Marvel movies with their Infinite Stone Saga with Avengers: Endgame. Star Wars ending the “Skywalker Saga” with Star Wars: Episode IX– The RIse of Skywalker. Game of Thrones ending with Season 8.
Boy howdy did the franchise make the other two Disney run ones fumble the ball. Many fans even to this day are still reeling from the lackluster way the TV show ended. Me personally? I haven’t caught up after Season 5, and well besides actor Charles Dance being on the show for the first four seasons and a few amusing side characters. The most entertainment I ever got with the series was the reviews Dr. Improbable did for the Outhousers back during those season. Seriously, one should really check out her reviews she did for the series. They are far more entertaining and fulfilling than anything we got in Season 8. Just go search for Game of Thrones reviews in the Outhouse archive. You won’t regret it.
#4 Netflix canceling Daredevil, the Punisher, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. (17 VOTES)
Last year, Netflix began the culling of their Marvel TV shows with Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. This year, they finished it as the Punisher (January) and Jessica Jones (June) aired their last seasons, before all of which were promptly canceled.
So ends the era of Marvel on streaming giant, as Disney looks to capitalize a new breed of Marvel TV shows on their own streaming service Disney+. Will it work? More than likely yes. Does the wounds of losing a lot of these shows still hurt? HELL YES. I’m still salty with Daredevil ending. Punisher… Not so much after the last season was literally a bomb for me.
#3 Ric Grayson continues to exist. (22 VOTES)
Two years ago (October 2018) in Nightwing #50, the concept of “Ric” Grayson was introduced by DC Comics, and the Nightwing ongoing itself still hasn’t recovered since. The series has gone thru numerous creative teams (we’re currently on our fourth writer for this book in just under two years). All because writer Tom King decided to take the character off the board, and could tell probably one of the worst Batman stories in years.
If there’s any positive, it’s to know that the end of this bleak era for the character will be over sometime this year. New Batman writer James Tynion IV being announced for the comic, that he’d taking out the “Ric” and putting back the “Dick”. So thankfully, this era of the character will mercifully end, and can be added to the additional stupid ideas DC took the character (like raping him, losing his own ongoing to a Vigilante, being tentacle raped, Jason Todd tentacle-monster eating a villain, four status quo changes in the New 52 era.
#2 The Outhouse going down. (23 VOTES)
Last year, on January 31st, it was announced The Outhouse i.e. http://www.theouthouers.com would be closing down on February 9th. After fourteen years, the site that was made popular for being the bane to DC Comics for being utterly honest and telling it as it was shut down it’s doors.
Though the site has long since had its final flush, many are still missing it. It reached our #2 most maddening moment of the year. I know it is still very difficult for our remaining readers who’ve come to the Comics Pit and wish Tim, myself, GLX, and sdsichero could bring back that golden era. But we endure, and are trying our best to continue on that fine tradition of telling it as it is.
Sadly, even the OH! closing couldn’t stop our #1 most maddening moment this year. As it opened last year coming in at #3, this year DC Comics once again regained the top spot infuriating comic book fans once again.
#1 Heroes in Crisis (36 VOTES)
When it was originally announced, many fans weren’t looking forward to this event story. As it began in 2018, many fans weren’t liking what they read. When 2019 began, comic fans were turning a corner. Heroes in Crisis was the atypical horrendous DC event in the spirit of such other abhorrently grim stupid event comics which truly kicked off the company: Identity Crisis, Much like Identity Crisis, many characters were thrown under the wheel, none so more than the third Flash, Wally West.
Revealed as the killer, fans are still coiling and furious at the gall DC Comics went to take a beloved character and the spirit of “hope” in the Rebirth line of comics. Then to for the company to stab and twist the knife in reader’s backs who returned because of it.
The event marked the true end of the Rebirth line and a slap in the face of the entire coda of the line. DC still hasn’t recovered from the event, given this won, which means many are still angry at the company. So much so you can already hear the whispers of what might win this year. I’ll give you a hint, it is not the kind of new comic book service you want.
So there it was. The moments of 2019 that made you all run red with rage. What will 2020 bring us? Well, I guess we shall see. Until the next time folks!!!
