Marvel continues to make announcements for February 2020 from MCM Comic Con London. This round has a couple of Robert E. Howard-related announcements. In January 2018, Marvel announced that they had the license to Howard’s Conan character, with comics to come the next year. It wasn’t long before the barbarian made his entrance into the Marvel Universe with the promise of other Howard characters to come.
It seems Marvel is having nostalgia about its Atlantis Attacks event, with a revival title coming in January, and a serpent-related title starring Conan coming a month earlier. February will bring another serpent-y title starring Conan. The 5-issue mini-series will be titled Conan: Battle for the Serpent Crown #1. The mini wil be written by Saladin Ahmed with art by Luke Ross, and colors by GURU-eFX.
Here’s a solicit text for Battle for the Serpent Crown #1:
A DEADLY QUEST AND A DARING HEIST…IN THE AGE OF MARVELS!
CONAN wanders the desert, and as he reaches the city, no Stygian temple nor Vendyhan fortress greets him. No, something far stranger: the lights of Fabulous Las Vegas! Conan is far from home, and it’s time for him to tread the thrones of the Marvel Universe under his sandaled feet!
The City of Sin is just the beginning for Conan’s solo jaunt by Saladin Ahmed (BLACK BOLT, MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN) and Luke Ross (STAR WARS: ALLEGIANCE, SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN), as the barbarian finds himself on a quest for a relic that predates even his Hyborian Age: the Serpent Crown of Atlantis! But will his battle for this crown earn Conan his own kingdom, or doom him to a nefarious trap set forth by MEPHISTO? Featuring a wide array of Marvel heroes and villains, this is an adventure you can’t afford to miss!
As we noted earlier, other Robert E. Howard characters would come to Marvel as well. Two of them, Solomon Kane and Dark Agnes will be appearing with Conan in the other serpent-related title in January and it is being announced that Dark Agnes will be getting her own 5-issue mini in February.
The Dark Agnes mini-series will feature the character pairing with Etienne Villers and will be written by Becky Cloonan with art by Luca Pizzari. Here’s how Marvel describes the series:
The five-issue limited series will depict the journey of Agnes de Chastillon as she frees herself from an arranged marriage to live the dangerous life of a sellsword in 16th-century France.
Cloonan gives her thoughts on the character of Dark Agnes:
“Agnes is the unsung anti-hero of Robert E. Howard’s legendary body of work. She’s a swashbuckling, musket wielding, doublet-wearing badass swordswoman from the early Renaissance. A fierce warrior, a stalwart friend, and a brutal, unrelenting force in a bloody, chaotic world. Agnes is just as relevant today as she was when Howard dreamed her up, and as she is in her own time: the filthy 1500s. Join us for a tale of mystery, adventure, and revenge!”
