Uncle of Nicolas Cage and filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola has thrown his hat into the ring on opinions no one asked for. In a recent interview with Yahoo!, the director backed Martin Scorsese’s comments that Marvel movies aren’t cinema because we don’t learn or gain something from them.
“When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration.”
The director of three Godfather movies went on to say that people gain nothing from seeing the same movie.
“I don’t know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again.”
The acclaimed director of the Michael Jackson vehicle Captain Eo and executive producer of The Bling Ring went a step further than Scorsese calling Marvel movies despicable.
“Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema. He didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is.”
Coppola is currently planning to direct Megalopolis, “a production on a grand scale with a large cast”, which will presumably not feature any superheroics.
