One of the most under-rated cult horror franchises, Maniac Cop, is coming back with some top names behind it. Oh, sure the names of Nicolas Winding Refn, John Hyams, and Ed Brubaker. Well, two of those names are coming for a TV series (Refn and Hyams, sadly no Brubaker) to be based on said franchise on HBO and be the first series to be produced by byNWR Originals (a TV production company founded by Refn).
The series will feature the perspectives of both criminals and police officers agasp at a slain officer of the law who’s risen from the grave to take unholy revenge on anyone who gets in his way.
Both Refn and Hyams will co-direct episodes, executive producer, and the former will serve as showrunner for the series. Original franchise director William Lustig (who directed two and a half of the three films) will serve as a producer for the series.
The original franchise all written by Larry Cohen followed Matt Cordell (played by the legendary Robert Z’dar) who returned from the dead and sought revenge on all who wronged him. Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, Richard Roundtree, Laurene Landon, and even features a cameo by Sam Rami. The sequel has Z’dar, Campbell, and Landon reprising their roles while Robert Davi, Claudia Christian, and Leo Rossi joining the cast. The final film, has both Z’dar and Davi back with Julius Harris, Jackie Earl Haley, Robert Forester, Paul Gleason, and Grand L. Bush showing up.
All three films are just so damn good and some under-rated gems of horror (okay Maniac Cop III: Badge of Silence is a mess, but still a fun film). If you never have seen these films. Do yourself a favor, go see them!
No word yet of a possible date for the series, but given this has been standard news for Maniac Cop fans, we’ll just have to wait. Until then we have the right to remain still silent… FOREVER.
