NYCC: Return Of The Marvel ‘Star Wars’ And ‘Darth Vader’ Comics (Updated)

A long time ago, back in August, Marvel announced that they were canceling their Star Wars “ongoing” comic in November (well, there was another…). With the end of the Skywalker Saga in the movies, this wasn’t completely unexpected. Of course, a relaunch of the line was expected, but would they move the timeline ahead now that the saga is complete?

Well, sort of. During the Lucasfilm Publishing Panel at New York Comic Con, the new Star Wars comic was announced. Once again, the title will be the generic “Star Wars” and it will be a new #1. The new title will take place a little into the future compared to the previous ongoing, with stories from the time between Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Charles Soule will be writing the new series, with art by Jesus Saiz. Soule says the new series will start off pretty dark, and will address questions such as:

“How does the Rebellion go from this rag tag scattered group that lost at Hoth to the hugely mobilized massive fleet that takes on Death Star II?” he asks. And before our heroes reconnect on Tatooine, “How is the mission to save Han planned?”

The new Star Wars #1 will launch in January 2020.

Though not officially announced by the official Star Wars channel yet, it looks like a new Darth Vader series will also be launching in February 2020 by writer Greg Pak and artist Raffaele Lenoo.

UPDATE: Provided a tiny bit of information about the Darth Vader title:

In this new epic chapter in the Darth Vader saga, the dark lord grapples with Luke‘s unthinkable refusal and embarks on a bloody mission of rage-filled revenge against everything and everyone who had a hand in hiding and corrupting his only son. But even as he uncovers the secrets of Luke’s origins, Vader must face shocking new challenges from his own dark past.

Also, the cover to the first issue of Darth Vader will be by InHyuk Lee.

Several other Star Wars books were also announced during the panel:

The Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker novelization will be by Rae Carson and launches in Spring 2020.

Alexander Freed’s Alphabet Squadron trilogy continues in June 2020 with the second book, Shadow Fall:

Blue Blue will return with another trilogy with Thrawn: The Ascendancy Trilogy by Timothy Zahn starting May 2020.

We also should get more information on the mysterious Project Luminous after the start of the new year.
