Martin Scorsese Says Marvel Movies Aren’t Cinema Which Makes James Gunn Sad

In an interview with Empire Magazine, legendary director Martin Scorsese said that Marvel movies aren’t “cinema.” Scorsese knows a thing or two about movies, with a career spanning 50 years and directing movies including Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, Gangs Of New York, and Casino.

“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” Scorsese told Empire. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Guardians Of The Galaxy director James Gunn was saddened by Scorsese’s remarks because he’s one of Gunn’s favorite filmmakers.

Scorsese’s latest film The Irishman is set to release on Netflix November 27.
