It isn’t Soul Plane 2, but this will surely do as the Boondocks are coming back in animated form, with creator Aaron McGruder back show-running the series (he left the original animated series after the third season) for HBO Max streaming service.
A press release revealed that the series will be returning in the fall of next year starting with an fifty minute special and then two seasons with twenty-four episodes each. Along with the new, the old series (which lasted four seasons) will also be available on HBO Max.
The premise will be the same save for one added bit.
The new Boondocks follows the adventures of self-proclaimed “Civil Rights Legend” Robert “Granddad” Freeman and his two rambunctious grandsons Huey and Riley. The family has recently moved to an idyllic community in suburban Maryland only to see it taken over by the tyrannical Uncle Ruckus and his bizarre neo-fascist regime. Life under Ruckus turns out to be an everyday struggle to survive.
It isn’t going to be hard to guess who Ruckus will be frothing at the mouth for in this new series. So far, the only cast member revealed is that John Witherspoon will be returning to voice Robert “Granddad” Freeman, and honestly I can’t see anyone else voicing the character.
