Netflix Has the POWER and Revives ‘Masters of the Universe’!

Well, this came out of nowhere. Announced at Powercon this past weekend, the classic 1980s cartoon Masters of the Universe is returning to Netflix and under the direction of Kevin Smith. The new series will be called, Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Along for the ride will be animation studio Powerhouse (aka the folks who are doing Castlevania).

Here’s the breakdown of what the plot will involve:

A radical return to Eternia, Revelation is a direct sequel series to the classic era of Masters of the Universe. Featuring fan favorites He-Man, Orko, Cringer and Man-At-Arms, the story pits our heroic warriors and guardians of Castle Grayskull against Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, Beastman and the vile legions of Snake Mountain!
But after a ferocious final battle forever fractures Eternia, it’s up to Teela to solve the mystery of the missing Sword of Power in a race against time to prevent the end of the Universe! Her journey will uncover the secrets of Grayskull at last. This is the epic He-Man and the Masters of the Universe saga fans have waited 35 yeas to see!

Here’s the official Netflix announcement (along with the promo poster for it):

The idea in theory sounds very much like what Hasbro did with G.I. Joe back in the mid-2000s with G.I. Joe Resolute. Which was a grittier and more adult version of the classic cartoon with a lot of connections to the classic 1980s series as well:
