With Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) due in theaters in February, You’d think DC Comics would try to cash in on that with a Birds of Prey comic. WHELP! They are starting in October 30th with a new comic being written by Brian Azzarello and drawn by Emanuela Lupacchino. Ray McCarthy and Trish Mulvihill will be providing the inks and colors for the comic. The reveal came via the Hollywood Reporter.
The story will feature Harley Quinn, Black Canary, and Huntress being sent on a mission by Detective Renee Montoya (also in the new movie) a new villain in Las Esposas de la Muerte’. Hmm.. I feel like there’s a fifth heroic character in the movie that’s being downplayed and not used in this new ongoing- almost as if there is spite involved with someone up on high afraid the character might become popular.
There’s also this quote by Azzarello that might trouble some: “Having Harley involved screws with the new BOP dynamic — hell, with every dynamic,” he said in a statement about the series. “She’s chaos, but she might be the most together member of the team. Canary, Huntress, and Montoya have a lot of damaged baggage. Ema and I are gonna unpack it.”
Myself I’m on the fence with. I enjoyed Azzarello’s Wonder Woman run save for one thing. His adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke for the animated movie on the other hand. Yeah…. That was hot garbage. Likewise a huge mess recently was Batman: Damned. So which Azzaraello will show up to the comic? I guess we’ll find out October 30th.
