Katsuhiro Otomo Announces New Projects Including Anime Series Of Akira

During a panel at Anime Expo yesterday, Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo announced multiple new projects. The first is Orbital Era, a new movie from Otomo, who is writing and directing, and Sunrise, the studio behind Gundam. This will be Otomo’s third film after 1988’s Akira, which is getting a 4K remaster, and 2004’s Steamboy. A teaser image and description are below.

The plot takes place in the near-future on a space colony under construction. It is an action-adventure story following the lives of some young boys surviving in this peculiar environment and society as they are tossed around by fate. “The reality found in mankind’s future” will be depicted through their perspective.

Kodansha is putting together a collection of Otomo’s works titled Otomo: The Complete Works. The collection will include every one of his works and statements in chronological order, beginning with his manga debut in 1971.

Otomo is producing a new anime series of Akira.
