It looks like the end of an era. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl title, after rebooting once already, is coming to an end with issue #50. It may sound strange, but the title is one of this writer’s favorite titles, having recommended it several times in a previous site’s holiday wishlists, for its refreshing (and hilarious) take on the heroes of the Marvel Universe. Series writer Ryan North brought the news about the end on Twitter today:
The team currently working on the title (writer North, artist Derek Charm, colorist Rico Renzi, and editor Wil Moss; series artist Erica Henderson left the title on issue #31) did an interview with The A.V. Club and the creative team noted that the title is not being canceled, rather, they “decided to wrap up the series after telling the stories it wanted to tell”.
North reflected a bit in the interview on how the character has expanded:
“I’m proud that we got a Squirrel Girl book that ran for 58 issues and an OGN,” … “I’m proud that the character became popular enough to be the core of a cartoon series (Marvel Rising); a novel spin-off series (Squirrel Girl: Squirrel Meets World and Squirrel Girl: 2 Fuzzy 2 Furious); a TV show pilot (New Warriors)…”
He also talked a little bit about why he felt it was time to end the series:
“But the truth of the matter is that when you’re working on a character in a shared universe, you only have a little time with her, and then someone else will take over” … “It’s a little like being a parent and watching your kid go off to school for the first time—you’ve done all you can, and you’ll always be in their corner, but now it’s up to them. All you can hope to do—and it’s something I hope we’ve achieved—is to leave your mark on the character in some way. I think Doreen Allene Green is a different person now, 5 years later, than she was when we started with her way back when, and I’m so proud of who she is now.”
The book’s final arc starts after the current tie-in with the War of the Realms event, issue #47.
The interview also has a preview of issue #45. With the ending of Squirrel Girl, and the recent announcement of the end of The Unbeatable Wasp, does this spell the end of the “Un” (as in fun) titles at Marvel?
