Disney To Release Alternating Star Wars And Avatar Films Every Year Starting In 2021

With Disney’s acquisition of Fox complete, they announced changes to their upcoming film slate and their two biggest franchises have moved some dates around.

Star Wars has three release dates set for new-and-untitled films: December 16, 2022; December 20, 2024; and December 18, 2026. Disney has previously announced two trilogies outside of the Skywalker saga from Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Avatar’s four sequels have also received new release dates: December 17, 2021; December 15, 2023; December 19, 2025; and December 17, 2021.

Box Office Mojo currently lists Avatar as the highest grossing film of all time, at $2.7 billion, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in fourth at $2.06 billion.

This future box office dominance doesn’t even take into account the upcoming slate of Marvel films to be announced after Spider-Man: Far From Home is released.
