Yes ‘Valkyrie’ Gets A New Title In July, But Not That Valkyrie

*WARNING: SPOILERS FOR WAR OF THE REALMS #2*

Back in March it was announced that Jason Aaron and Al Ewing would be working on a new title starring Valkyrie… One would guess that the title would be starring Brunnhilde/Annabelle Riggs, who recently appeared in Asgardians of the Galaxy title, but — and here’s the SPOILER part — she perished in War of the Realms #2. So, who is the Valkyrie in this comic? No, it isn’t the Thor: Ragnarok-inspired Valkyrie that appeared in 2018’s Exiles title, this is a new Valkyrie.

Well… sort of new. The character is not new to the Thor side of comics, but new to the Valkyrie role. It’s the former nurse and Mighty Thor, Jane Foster who “died” but got better. Ewing talks about the new version of Valkyrie:

“Jane knows how to be Thor, but the role of Valkyrie — the warrior who fights for the living and the dead, and stands between both — is a very different beast. It’s a sacred task, and brings additional abilities — and responsibilities — of its own. As the first of a new generation of Valkyries, Jane has to decide for herself what that task involves, and that’s a big part of what we’ll be exploring in this series. If you’re reading this, you know who Valkyrie is, but what she is is one of the big philosophical underpinnings of the book.”

Foster no longer wields Mjolnir, but she will have Undrjarn the All-Weapon, which can change its shape.

In addition to having Aaron and Ewing on writing duties, Valkyrie will have Cafu on interior art, and Mahmud Asrar doing covers. The title will take flight in July.
