Disney Stops Mouse Guard Movie Two Weeks Before Production Starts

Fox’s adaptation of Mouse Guard has been halted by Fox’s new parent Disney, two weeks before production was set to begin. No reason was given, but rumors for the cancellation include that the use of motion capture and CGI to bring the animals to life was too close to The Lion King and The Jungle Book or that Disney wants Fox to focus on lower budget movies, instead of Mouse Guard with its $170 million price tag.

The producers on the film, including Matt Reeves, Ross Ritchie, and Stephen Christy, are shopping the project to other studios.

Based on David Petersen’s comic of the same name, Mouse Guard was set to be directed by Wes Bell and starred Andy Serkis, Idris Elba, Samson Kayo, and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.
