While not as well-known as videogames such as Konami‘s Castlevania or Capcom‘s Devil May Cry, well-regarded 2016 indie game Hyper Light Drifter will be getting an animated series produced by Adi Shankar. Yes, the same Adi Shankar that help bring to life the Castlevania animated series, now up for a third season, and will be bringing Devil May Cry to series as well. Hyper Light Drifter’s creator, Alx Preston, is in on the series as well.
Hyper Light Drifter is described this way:
Echoes of a dark and violent past resonate throughout a savage land, steeped in treasure and blood. Hyper Light Drifter is an action adventure RPG in the vein of the best 16bit classics, with modernized mechanics and designs on a much grander scale.
The game started out as a Kickstarter for Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X, and Linux, but raised enough money that it was also brought to Sony Playstation 4, Microsoft Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. It’s been compared to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
Bringing the game to animated series is still in its early stages as they are still trying to figure out how they will translate the game to series Preston reveals:
“The difference between a series and a game is vast in a lot of ways”… “Hyper Light as a game was pretty atmospheric and kind of overbearing at times. For a series, the question is: how do you sustain and keep your attention on a non-interactive run? Does it get really, really dark and serious? Does it have some levity?”
Preston is inspired by Hayao Miyazaki‘s Ghibli films, but we’ll see how much of that gets into the series. The main takeaway Preston wants to assure fans of the game about the series is:
“We’re going to make it cool.”
No start date for the Hyper Light Drifter series has been announced yet.
