Much like one of its main characters, Second Coming was pronounced dead before rising from the grave shortly after. Mark Russell and Richard Pace’s buddy comic involving Jesus Christ was set to be published by Vertigo Comics before various internet petitions called for it to be cancelled, which it was on February 13. Entering stage left was Ahoy Comics to swoop in and pick up the controversial title.
“God commands Earth’s mightiest superhero, Sunstar, to accept Jesus Christ as his roommate and teach him how to use His power in a more powerful way. Jesus, shocked at the way humans have twisted his message over two millennia, vows to straighten it out.”
This isn’t Russell’s first brush with published religious works as he also released the prose books God Is Disappointed in You and Apocrypha Now with illustrator Shannon Wheeler at Topshelf Productions.
With Ahoy Comics as the publisher, Russell and Pace are free to use as much nudity and language they’d like, which would’ve been censored by Vertigo.
The first of six issues of Second Coming is set to release July 10, 2019 with a cover by Amanda Conner.
