Critical Role is foremost a web show that chronicles the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) adventures of the Vox Machina team. The dungeon master and participants are professional voice actors who perform the weekly adventures. Dungeons & Dragons has regained some popularity recently with the release of its 5th edition, and Critical Role recently had a successful Kickstarter campaign to get some of their story animated.
Last Summer, the adventures of the Vox Machina group also expanded to the world of comics. Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins series I was released digitally and told the story of how the Vox Machina group formed. This year the series written by Matthew Mercer (the voice actor who acts as the dungeon master for the show) and Matthew Colville, with art by Olivia Samson, and colors by Chris Northrop, will resurface as a trade paperback on October 15, 2019. The 168-page volume will have a MSRP of $19.99.
The release of the trade paperback should get folks ready for the follow-up (notice it says series I?). Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins series II #1, the first of a six-issue series, will hit both digital and actual shelves July 10, 2019. Matthew Mercer will be back to co-write along with new-to-the-title Jody Houser. Olivia Samson will also return for art, this time teaming up with colorist MSASSYK and letterer Ariana Maher. Series II will be collected into a trade paperback in the Summer of 2020.
Along with the comics, a Critical Role artbook will be released. Critical Role: The Chronicles of Exandria — The Mighty Nein will be a hardcover collection of fan art that contains art from the show’s second campaign, the Mighty Nein campaign. The illustrations in the book will be accompanied by text from the show members Liam O’Brien and Taliesin Jaffe. The book, due out in late 2019, will be 200 pages and retail for $39.99.
